So who else has switched shampoos five times this year and still feels like their hair is stuck where it was? Still the same amount of shedding (hopefully not more), still the same issues, still the same length. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Hi, I’m Nina, trichologist in training and founder of 360 Haircare. And let me tell you, I see this all the time. I mean allllllllllll the time. Women investing in every trending product, hoping for a miracle, but seeing little to no progress.
The truth? Hair health goes far beyond the label on your shampoo bottle. It’s not just about ingredients or those bold (and sometimes bogus) claims. Here are five real reasons your hair is still pretty much the same: same issues, same concerns, same condition.
1. You’re Treating Hair, Not Scalp
Most people tend to focus only on the outer strands, doing everything they can to smooth or condition, while completely ignoring the root of it all: the scalp and what’s going on beyond just the surface of your hair. Hair grows from follicles embedded in the scalp, and if that environment is inflamed, clogged, or unbalanced, growth slows down. On top of that, it can cause other issues like an increased in shedding.
If your scalp is itchy, oily, flaky, or dry, that’s your first sign to shift focus.
2. You’re Overwashing or Underwashing
And then there’s the classic debate of “I wash only once a week!” vs. “I wash every day!” Let me tell you, both extremes can sabotage your growth. Washing too frequently strips natural oils and disrupts your scalp balance, which can actually trigger more oil production. On the other hand, waiting too long leads to buildup, clogged follicles, and increased hair fall.
The key is balance. If your whole haircare routine follows a fixed setting instead of adapting to your hair’s condition, then stop wondering why it’s not working. Learn to read the signs. Wash when your scalp feels oily or heavy. Nothing more, nothing less.
3. Your Hair Is Shedding as Fast as It’s Growing
Hair grows at an average of about half an inch, 1–1.5 centimeters per month, but if you’re not seeing length, something is cancelling out your progress. Maybe you’ve been so focused on cleansing that you forgot to nurture your strands.
Hair holds memory, of the times you neglected it, overwash it, roughed it up, or refused to feed it properly. Most of the time, it’s not “just falling,” it’s leaving because of what we’ve done or not done.
4. You’re Not Supporting Hair Growth From the Inside
Hair is a non-essential tissue. It’s often the first to show signs when your body is undernourished and the last to receive nutrients. Low levels of protein, iron, zinc, or even chronic stress and sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on hair health.
5. You’re Chasing Trends Instead of Consistency
Yes, we’ve arrived at the most important part. Switching products constantly, trying every viral hack, or expecting overnight results is working against you.
In trichology, we call fast-claiming products as the 'marketing miracles'. The truth is, hair growth takes time. What your hair needs most isn’t a miracle, it’s consistency.
Expert Thoughts
Let’s be clear. Picking the right shampoo matters, but so is the routine you build post shampooing. Real hair progress requires a root-to-tip, inside-out approach.
Treat your hair like it’s a living extension of your body. Build a gentle routine around her. Use shampoos that cleanse deeply without over-stripping. Don’t remove everything she needs to stay healthy. Nourish her with a real hair mask, not a waxy coat, but a formula that feeds her nutrients and hydration she loses with every wash. Prioritize sleep, stress management, hydration, and a protein-rich, balanced diet. Supplements can help, but your lifestyle is the foundation. Simplify. Stick to a routine that supports your scalp, your strands, and your health for at least 90 days. Give it time, then see how she responds.
If you’re ready to stop guessing and start truly understanding your hair, stick around. I’m here to help.
With heart and hair,
